In the College of Engineering, 26 professors are members of the National Academy of Engineering or the National Academy of Sciences. Half of the student body participates in the college's $56-million-a-year research program through independent projects with faculty members.

The first student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers was founded at Cornell, and the university's first engineering alumna, Kate Gleason, class of 1889, went on to a career as the first woman president of a national bank.

Departments in the college include computer science, earth and atmospheric sciences, electrical and computer engineering, physics, materials science, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and operations research.
