The nine story VRT is designed to relate closely with the surrounding buildings. It shares the same stylistic characteristics and emphasis upon materials rather than ornamentation as does Boyce Thompson Institute. The curved northern facade is comprised of a black glass curtain wall set in narrow metal mullions and is supported by an open loggia with cylindrical columns. The main entrance is enclosed in black glass. The other facades are sheathed in a deep brown brick (set in a common bond) with the exception vertical strip windows on the west and east facades. Vertical circulation shafts on the perimeter of the east and west facades allow for more interior space and flexibility. The southern side features raised and projecting panels, a rectangular one story appendage, and exposed ventilation systems that have been creatively integrated into the building design.
