Myron Taylor Hall
Law School Library
Myron Taylor Hall followed Willard Straight Hall (1924) as the second collegiate Gothic building on Central Avenue. This building, named after its donor, is the first of two sumptuous memorials by steel industrialist Myron C Taylor. The adjoining building (1953) honors his wife Anabel Stuart Taylor. To the west extends the collegiate Gothic Hughes Hall.(1962, 1974). Myron Taylor has an L-shaped plan. The short end which extends eastward toward Central Ave, houses the library with its large and elegant reading room marked by tall windows. A seven-story tower anchors the entrance at the southwest corner of the L-plan. To negotiate the slope downward and away from Central Ave, the longer western block is setback from the street and fronted by a sunken courtyard. This block houses offices, classrooms, and the stately moot court room. The structure has walls in gray-brown Ithaca stone, trimmed in limestone. Limestone carvings throughout relate to the law. The high-pitched roofs are in gray and purple slate. The collegiate Gothic Jane M Foster Library Addition (1987) added to the south facade provides a second tower and a new and more prominent entrance on Central Ave. The addition houses an atrium, library and office space. Differences from the original building include a reduction in the use of limestone in the window frames and elimination of leading in the panes.
