Rockefeller Hall was the first University project on the hilltop along East Ave. The massing allows for and embraces a front lawn maintaining the hillside. the hipped-roofed symmetrical building is directly behind and centered on Goldwin Smith Hall. Although built by the same architect as Goldwin Smith, the two buildings are of different styles. Red brick which alternates with wooden panels and tall windows gives Rockefeller Hall a rustic imager, as opposed to the classicism of Goldwin Smith. There have been various minor alterations. In 1980, Levatich & Hoffman designed a three-phase construction renovation. This was the only remodeling which altered the facades. A wall was demolished and rebuilt as a protruding bay on the western portion of the south face. Materials used were matched to original materials and attention was paid to matching window details and roofing.
