Ulrich Franzen's design of Boyce Thompson Institute emphasizes materials rather than ornamentation and is a gateway ensemble with the Veterinary Research Tower. Constructed in brown brick set in common bond pattern this massive structure features many curves, recessed walls, projecting panels, and strips of black glass windows throughout the building. The main entrance which is fronted by Tower Rd has a semi-enclosed loggia. The doorway is a double glass door with glass sidelights and a glass transom. There is a similar secondary entrance on the east side. The south side features ventilation systems that have been creatively integrated into the building design, a one story appendage, and a high tech, climate controlled glass greenhouse set on a concrete foundation.
